WASHINGTON – US Senator Charles Schumer urged Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson to speed up the pace of their ongoing PFOA/PFOS contamination investigations and remediation efforts on and around the Stewart Air National Guard Base in the towns of Newburgh and New Windsor.
The base has been determined to be the cause of severe chemical contamination of the City of Newburgh’s main water supply, Washington Lake, and local streams feeding into it. The city has been connected to the New York City Catskill Aqueduct for the last two years after the contamination was discovered.
In a recent meeting with Wilson, Schumer said the Air Force “must be more aggressive, move faster and must make tangible progress cleaning up the PFOS contamination in and around Stewart.”
The senator said after the meeting that he believes Wilson “appreciated the urgency of the situation and I look forward to working with her, the USAF and local stakeholders to make better progress going forward.”
