NEW YORK- With the boating season right around the corner some new components of a previously passed mandate will take effect that will require a new cohort of operators to complete safety training prior to operating a boat.

The law, named in honor of Brianna Lieneck who was tragically killed in a boating accident in August of 2005, implements regulation this year that requires all boat operators born after January 1, 1978 complete safety training.  The final portion of the legislation, which will take effect in 2025, will extend the requirement to all boaters.  The original law was passed in 2020 and phased in over a five year period.

In addition to passing the safety course, boaters are now required to possess proof of completion of the safety course, which must be produced for law enforcement upon demand.
