The elderly driver survived, with injuries
KINGSTON – An elderly Kingston man sustained neck and back injuries Thursday when his car struck the rear of a pickup truck at a stop sign and went over the edge of an abandoned railroad tunnel, plunging to the old rail bed below.
The incident occurred around 9:17 a.m. The vehicle was nose down, leaning against the tunnel wall in an unstable position with the driver, Robert Gorsline, 90, suspended by his seatbelt.
Emergency personnel removed and treat him, taking him to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
City Police investigation found Gorsline was traveling northeast on Delaware Avenue towards Hasbrouck Avenue when he collided with the rear of the stopped pickup truck driven by Florence Schoonmaker, 38, of Kingston.
Gorsline’s car continued through the intersection, left the roadway and careened over the edge of the tunnel to the rail bed below.
Schoonmaker was not injured.
The investigation is continuing.
