BEAR MOUNTAIN – The Bear Mountain Bridge over the Hudson River connecting the Orange/Rockland border with the Westchester/Putnam border will now be known as the Purple Heart Veterans Memorial Bridge.
Senator William Larkin and Assemblywoman Sandy Galef sponsored the measure
to change the name. The governor just signed it.
“With countless vehicles traveling every day over The Purple Heart Veterans Memorial Bridge, I believe we will be appropriately honoring our combat-wounded brothers and sisters of purple,” said William Nazario, state commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Larkin, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, said it is “imperative that we never lose sight of the sacrifice they and their families made for our state and our country.”
Larkin noted the Hudson Valley is “rich with military history including West Point, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and now the bridge renaming. The WWII and Korean War vet also played a vital role in creating the Purple Heart Hall of Honor in nearby New Windsor.
