TOWN OF SOUTHEAST – Tragedy struck the Brewster School District on the eve of the opening day.
A high school boy drowned Monday night in Lake Tonetta in the Town of Southeast despite the efforts of emergency responders from both Putnam and Westchester counties.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Oscar Gonzalez, 14, who was to celebrate his 15th birthday next week.
According to witnesses, around 9 p.m., Gonzalez and three friends were on a paddle board that turned over with Gonzalez disappearing under water. About 50 minutes later divers from the Mahopac Falls Fire Department located the teen, who was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 10:17 p.m.
