NEWBURGH – Dr. Devender Chhabra, an oral surgeon with an office in a building he owns in Newburgh, owes some $160,000 in property taxes over a three-year period.
He wants to pay them now, but the city has said he missed the statutory time limit.
A large contingent of patients, neighbors and friends spoke Monday night
in support of the doctor urging the city to let Chhabra pay the back taxes
and keep his property.
Following executive session, the council decided to take their recommendation under consideration, said Mayor Torrance Harvey.
“We decided it is worth our corporate counsel, which is our city attorney, to reach out to Dr. Chhabra’s attorney and do some hopeful negotiations,” Harvey said. “So, that is where we are; we can’t get into full details, but once again, the community has spoken.”
Chhabra was praised for caring for patients regardless of whether they could pay for the care.
