Washington Lake – nice to look at but don’t drink the water

NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh’s lawsuit filed recently against manufacturers of the carcinogenic chemicals PFOS and PFOA, as well as state and federal agencies, owners and operates of New York Stewart International Airport, is seeking the contaminated water supply to be remediated.
The state has built a new carbon filtration plant for the water in the city’s reservoir, Washington Lake, which has not been used for some two years.
But, City Manager Michael Ciaravino said the city will take their demands one step further.
“Unless we get measurable results that are different from what is happening right now in our watershed, we are currently asking the federal court to keep the City of Newburgh on the New York City Catskill Aqueduct water into perpetuity for the lifetime of the City of Newburgh,” he said.
The new carbon filtration system has been determined not to filter out all types and levels of the chemicals and therefore, Ciaravino said Washington Lake should not be used for a water supply ever again.
