NEW YORK – Former State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who was
sentenced this past Friday to seven years in prison, could wind up in
Otisville federal prison.
The 74-year-old disgraced leader, who was sentenced a second time after
his first conviction was overturned, must surrender to prison on October
5 and federal Judge Valerie Caproni recommended he be sent to the Otisville
facility, which provides services for Orthodox Jewish prisoners.
Silver was convicted of taking $4 million in kickbacks as well as $1 million
in profits from two corruption schemes.
He is expected to appeal this second conviction as he did the first.
