MIDDLETOWN – The City of Middletown, which has banned all fireworks including sparklers, recorded a substantial decrease in the number of fireworks related complaints and arrests during the recent Independence Day Holiday. During the 24-hour period of July 4, Police responded to 82 fireworks related complaints, issuing a total of 23 summonses for possession and/or use of illegal fireworks. During the same time in 2017, the Police Department handled 109 fireworks complaints, resulting in 33 summonses.
The statistics for 2018 reflect a 25% decrease in the number of fireworks related complaints and a 40% decrease in the number of arrests, year-over-year.
The police department attributes the sharp decline in both fireworks complaints and arrests to the aggressive advertising and marketing campaign that was launched by the police department and Middletown City Hall this spring.
The Middletown Common Council in 2017 banned the possession, use, and sale of all fireworks and sparklers within the confines of the City of Middletown.
