Putnam residents take the oath of allegiance to the United States
CARMEL – There are now 48 new American citizens living in Putnam County
as they took their oath of allegiance to the United States and received
a rousing ovation at the historic Putnam Courthouse.
The ceremony, on Thursday, attended by family and friends of the new citizens,
was the second of the year for Putnam County.
Since 2015, following a 20 year hiatus, dozens of newcomers took their oaths
of allegiance thanks to the efforts of County Clerk Michael Bartolotti.
America’s newest citizens come from all corners of the world including
El Salvador, Brazil, India, Egypt, Nigeria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary,
Poland, India, Philippines, Jamaica, United Kingdom, Hungary, Peru, Guatemala,
Pakistan, Columbia and Mexico.
The hour-long ceremony was officiated over by State Supreme Court Justice
James Rooney who called on the newest citizens to “be the best you
can be. Enjoy life and always enjoy America.”
Rooney told a story about his late grandfather, Thomas Rooney. “My
granddad emigrated to the U.S. from his native Ireland on March 24, 1884,
and became a proud citizen of the United States right here in this courtroom.
He purchased our family’s first home in Brewster on Main Street in
1907 fulfilling the American Dream. Today, Putnam has become a true melting
pot where tolerance for all must be realized.”
Bartolotti praised the 48 new citizens assembled telling them, “This
day is for each of you. Our population has become more diversified in recent
years. Many of us take our citizenship for granted. You have strived to
become American citizens. Today is your day.”
County Executive MaryEllen Odell rose to the lectern and said, “My
fellow Americans—welcome! Hold your heads high and always remember
that this is the greatest nation in the world. Putnam County represents
the true beacon of freedom, hope and justice.”
Agustin Irineo received his citizenship along with his wife, Maria.
The couple, who emigrated from Mexico, attended the ceremony with their
two sons, Uriel and Axel.
“I am so happy that this day has come,” said Irineo.
