ALBANY – The rate of joblessness across the Hudson Valley is declining.
All counties experienced a drop in unemployment in May, according to the latest figures from the state Labor Department.
Analyst John Nelson said much of that is due to ongoing new development in Sullivan County. He pointed to the casino resort, which is recruiting 500 more workers beyond the 1,500 already hired, as well as the upscale spa due to open shortly and a large waterpark complex that is also under construction.
Columbia County had the lowest rate in the region, at 3.2 percent. That was followed by 3.5 percent in Putnam County, 3.6 percent in both Dutchess and Rockland counties, 3.7 percent in Ulster County, 3.8 percent in Westchester County, 3.9 percent in Sullivan and Orange counties, and 4.4 percent in Greene County.
