CARMEL- A rash of thieves entering unlocked vehicles during nighttime hours has prompted Carmel Police to urge the public to “always lock your vehicle prior to retiring.”

Police Friday reported a number of vehicles illegally entered several parked in private driveways when residents were at home.

Sgt. Erin Macom said the thievery began around May 1 and during the past few weeks as many as two dozen cars were entered.

Police say the thieves are looking for key fobs, cash, EZ passes, documents, wallets, ear pods and other electronic devices.

The police official said detectives were investigating to determine if the latest round of criminal mischief was part of an organized crime movement or individuals seeking to make a quick hit and run. She added that vehicles had not been stolen nor had they been damaged by the perpetrators.

“Don’t be an easy target. The best way to protect yourself is to lock your car, remove all the valuables and if possible park your vehicle in a lighted area or install motion detector lights at your home,” she said.

Meanwhile, Carmel Supervisor Mike Cazzari, a retired police officer, urged the public to never confront the suspect:  “Don’t put yourself in danger! Call 9-1-1 and provide a description of the individual and a vehicle he or she may be driving.”
