WHITE PLAINS – Two men were sentenced Thursday in Westchester County Court in connection with the shooting death of Joseph Smith III in a Greenburgh apartment building.
Vance Major and Timothy Whitney were sentenced on charges of robbery and hindering prosecution in connection with the August 17, 2017 shooting.
A third man, Trevon Major, 16, is serving 15 years in prison on a manslaughter charge for pulling the trigger.
Whitney will serve two to four years in prison for robbery and 1 ½ to three years for hindering prosecution. Both sentences are to run concurrently.
Vance Major will serve one year in the county jail for robbery and one year for hindering prosecution, both sentences to run consecutively for a total of two years in jail.
District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. said the shooting stemmed from the theft of a neck chain and cell phone from another person. Smith, the fiancé of the victim’s mother, went to their apartment and when he knocked on the door, they opened it with Trevon Major fatally shooting Smith.
