VALHALLA – The US Department of Education awarded $211,361 to Westchester Community College to sustain access to the school’s campus-based childcare for low-income students.
The funds come from the Child Care Access Means Parents in School Program. It enables low-income parents to pursue a post-secondary education by providing them access to campus-based child care programs.
Under the grant, approximately 35 Pell-eligible student-parents at WCC will receive subsidies for child care worth as much as $4,754 annually.
“Hard-working parents should not be forced to choose between their education and childcare,” said Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D, NY-17), who announced the grant on Monday. “For our economy to succeed, it is imperative that every American have access to an education and the skills to find good-paying jobs.”
