HAVERSTRAW – Work is expected to start shortly on a cleanup project including removal of some 30,000 tons of coal-tar impacted soil at the Village of Haverstraw site of a former manufactured gas plant that has been closed for over 80 years.
The project, by Orange and Rockland Utilities, is expected to take about
eight months and cost some $10 million. The one-acre parcel, owned by
O&R, is located at 120 Maple Avenue, a residential and commercial
area that is zoned for light industrial use. The company has no plans
for the property’s future use.
The site is vacant with only piping from the former gas regulator station on the property.
Most of the site excavation work will take place under a large tent-like fabric structure of approximately 230 feet by 120 feet by 45 feet, with a carbon-filter, air-handling system.
The excavated soil will be trucked off site for thermal treatment and disposal to approved, licensed facilities in Fort Edward, New York and Morrisville, Pennsylvania.
Clean fill will be trucked in to replace the excavated soil.
Remediation work will take place Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
