NEW PALTZ – A New Paltz woman has been charged with burglary and grand larceny, both as felonies for allegedly breaking into the room of a tenant in the residence in which she lives.
Police said the homeowner reported hearing noises coming from one of the bedrooms she rents in her home. The owner, who called police, told them the tenant for that room was away, but she heard sounds coming from the locked bedroom.
While officers were at the scene, the tenant came home, unlocked the room and police found the suspect, Luz Zapata, 25, a tenant in another room in the house, inside the other bedroom.
Investigation determined that Zapata had entered the room, allegedly looking to steal money and that between February and March, she had been involved in the ongoing theft of money from the homeowner.
Zapata was sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond pending a future court appearance.
