WAWAYANDA – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon announced
on Saturday her opposition to the CPV power plant. She made the announcement
while surrounded by hundreds of local power plant opponents at the site
of the facility in Wawayanda.
“This is a monstrosity; this is an illegality; it should never have been built; it was pushed through with bribes,” she told those who gathered in front of the plant.
Nixon, who has launched a campaign against fellow Democrat, incumbent Andrew Cuomo, said just with the plant being tested with diesel fuel, “it is ruining people’s lives.”
Even if and when the facility is operated with fracked gas, Nixon condemned the plant.
“Fracked gas is not a bridge fuel; fracked gas is a bridge to nowhere,” she said. “This kind of investment, not only the power plants, the compressor stations, the pipelines, the pipeline expansions; it’s locking us into decades of fossil fuel dependence.”
The political novice who was one of the stars in the “Sex in the City” TV series, has unveiled her environmental agenda, including support for 100 percent renewable energy.
Prior to her joining the rally in front of CPV, Nixon met with a handful of CPV opponents including organizer Pramilla Malick in an area resident’s home.
At the rally, Malick said Nixon has done something that no politician in Orange County has done, “she sat down and talked to the people impacted by CPV.”
