TOWN OF WALLKILL – As the fight to quell the opioid epidemic continues, one organization is addressing the scourge head on.
Access: Supports for Living, headquartered in the Town of Wallkill is providing its medication-assisted treatment program at its community counseling centers in Middletown and Newburgh.
Access President Amy Anderson-Winchell said the new program is a vital component in the agency’s care.
“We have treated people with complex behavioral health needs for decades and so often when people have a mental health issue, there is an additional substance abuse issue and not having had the tool to really assist people from recovery from opiate addiction has been a barrier in our treatment,” Anderson-Winchell said.
The program is overseen by Access’ Medical Director Dr. Lanre Somorin. “Medication Assisted Treatment is an effective therapy for treating opioid abuse,” he said. “It treats addiction as a whole-body illness, which it is, and it requires whole-body treatment to achieve and sustain recovery.”
