PORT CHESTER – Westchester
County Executive George Latimer, Thursday, called on state lawmakers to
approve early voting New York. The proposal, to allow voting for one week
before the general election, is included in the governor’s budget
proposal, which must be approved by March 31.

Latimer, a former state senator, said the measure would provide the opportunity
for many more residents to cast their ballots. He noted that bad weather,
illness, personal and job responsibilities can keep voters away from the
polls on election day.

The county executive said the State Assembly has approved the proposal
in past years, but it has never come to the floor of the State Senate.

Latimer urged Westchester residents to sign an online petition calling
for state legislators to approve early voting, which is in effect in 37
other states.
