TOWN OF WALLKILL – Newmart Promotions has been conducting three gun shows every year for a decade with no problems and the latest one, held this weekend at the Orange County Fairgrounds in the Town of Wallkill is no exception.
Despite the debate over gun ownership, company president Newman Chittenden said they have safety checks in place that require anyone coming to the show with a firearm to check it in and have it disabled during their visit.
“We make sure the firearm is unloaded,” Chittenden said. “We then put in a non-removable plastic tie through the action so they cannot be functioned and if they are carrying the ammunition for that weapon, we keep that ammunition in a bag here with a name on it until they leave the room. In addition to that, all of our dealers are required to have a non-removable tie through the action of any cartridge firearm they have on their table.”
A representative from the federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was also on hand passing out literature about gun safety.
Recently, Westchester County banned all gun shows from county facilities.
The Orange County Fairgrounds is privately owned.
