ALBANY – A proposal by the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to give free computer tablets to every prison inmate in the state is being blasted by Assemblyman James Skoufis (D, Woodbury).  He called the plan “a slap in the face to law-abiding New Yorkers.”
Skoufis said while he understands and supports prison programming that provides skills and GEDs to prisoners, “providing free tablets to each and every inmate is ridiculous.”
He said there are “many students, seniors on fixed incomes, people with disabilities, and others who would stand to benefit from computer tablets but simply cannot afford them.” The lawmaker said the proposal is “just plain wrong.”
Skoufis said a number of correction officers have reached out to him “alarmed” that inmates would be able to sent emails to outside individuals through the tablets.
He called on the state prison system to “immediately withdraw their proposal and reconsider their priorities.”
