GOSHEN – An Orange County Court jury, Tuesday, convicted a Newburgh man of felony assault, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon for striking two men in the City of Newburgh with a padlock and chain.
At the trial, prosecutors argued that early on the morning of May 20, 2017. Carlos Melendez, 29, used a padlock and chain to strike two men in the head. One suffered life-threatening serious injuries and required hospitalization.
Melendez faces 26 1/3 to 29 years in state prison when sentenced next month by County Court Judge Craig Stephen Brown.
District Attorney David Hoovler said Melendez’s conduct “could easily have resulted in the loss of life and is deserving of a length sentence of incarceration.”
