NEWBURGH – A Newburgh man was arrested by Orange County Sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday afternoon after a traffic stop.
Deputies saw a car make an illegal U-turn on Liberty Street and initiated a traffic stop. While deputies spoke to the occupants, they detected an odor or marijuana and asked them to step out.
The driver complied, but the front seat passenger, Lionel Velasquez, 43, of Newburgh, fled on foot, and was apprehended on South Lander Street.
Deputies recovered 4.6 grams of crack cocaine, 12 grams of heroin, and 1.6 grams of marijuana from Velasquez.
Velasquez was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and a second count with intent to distribute, assault, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana.  He has several prior felony convictions, so was sent to the Orange County Jail without bail.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by Newburgh City Police.  One deputy was treated and released for minor injuries.
