GOSHEN – People across the country visited veterans’ graves placing wreathes at their final resting places as Wreathes Across America was held simultaneously at mid-day on Saturday. Orange County was no exception.
Several hundred people attended with cold weather temperatures in the mid-20s to place a wreathe and American flag at each grave.
“The freedoms we enjoy today have not come without a price. Lying here among us and in cemeteries throughout this nation are men and women who given their lives so that we can live in freedom and without fear,” said Orange County Veterans Services Director Christian Farrell in a brief ceremony. “Our nation stands as a shining beacon of liberty and freedom to the world. We thank those who gave their lives to keep us free. We will not forget you.”
Junior ROTC members from Minisink Valley schools placed wreathes and small American flags at each gravesite, but even more meaningful when family members had the honor of placing those tokens on their own relatives’ graves.
Similar ceremonies were held in other cemeteries around the region including
at the West Point Cemetery.
