GOSHEN – A Kingston man was sentenced on Monday by Orange County
Court Judge Craig Stephen Brown to 3 1/3 to 10 years in state prison in
connection with the death of a 37-year-old passenger in his pickup truck.

James Black, 29, pled guilty to vehicular manslaughter in the death of
37-year-old Detrell Pittman of Kingston.

Black was driving on Quaker Street in the Town of Newburgh at about 1:46
p.m. on December 22, 2016 when the truck ran off the road and struck a
tree, killing Pittman.

It was alleged that Black admitted speeding while being under the influence
of alcohol. His blood alcohol content was .19 percent.

Black also suffered injuries in the crash. He was not immediately arrested
pending an investigation by Town of Newburgh police and an Orange County
grand jury.

“This case is yet another reminder of the deadly consequences of
driving while intoxicated, which continues to devastate the lives of far
too many victims, victims’ families, offenders, and offenders’
families,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “Deaths caused
by intoxicated drivers are as tragic as they are preventable.”

The case was prosecuted by Chief Trial Assistant DA John Geidel.
