NEW WINDSOR – Town Police in New Windsor identified the man killed in the explosions and fire at Verla International on Monday as William Huntington, 57, of Newburgh.
A statement from Verla said he was “a valued employee and we at Verla are sorry to his friends and family for their loss.”
Police said firefighting operations continued at Verla on Temple Hill Road until 12:15 Tuesday morning. Orange County Fire investigators are investigating the cause of the fire and explosions.
St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital President Joan Cusack McGuirk said on Tuesday some 130 people flocked to the emergency room at the Newburgh campus following the incident. That was on top of the 125 patients they treated in a normal day.
McGuirk said the hospital and the entire emergency services community drills for events but, “This was the real deal” and the entire health care community performed admirably.
