Lucy Mercado packs boxes to be sent to troops
NEW WINDSOR – The foundation Support Our Heroes is continuing its
mission of providing “Care” type packages to service members
overseas.
Lucy Mercado of New Windsor founded the non-profit in 2004 when her son,
Luis Mercado, Jr., was stationed in Iraq.
“I started the foundation with the intent that it would only be
for a couple of years, if that long,” she said. “Here I am
13 years later, reaching out to people and doing fundraisers trying to
keep the foundation afloat.”
Mercado is sending supplies to three platoons overseas, two of which are
from New Windsor. “They need our support, help and motivation. Show
them they are not forgotten and always appreciated,” she said.
