MIDDLETOWN – Faced with a decline in enrollment, SUNY Orange administration is seeking county legislature approval to offer a voluntary retirement incentive to a dozen faculty and staff with 20 years or more of service to the college.
The officials came before lawmakers Monday seeking permission to offer 75 percent pay to eligible employees.
The chairman of the legislature’s Education and Economic Development Committee, Paul Ruszkiewicz, said the college would hope to resolve their financial issues.
“They are looking at this incentive as a way to save money and
without layoffs to help out with their financial situation,” Ruszkiewicz
said. “It is a rather large incentive, however, it will allow them
to save quite a bit of money and borrowing that money from the fund balance
and hopefully pay it off in two years.”
College administrators want county permission to spend up to $1 million to offer the retirement incentive.
Ruszkiewicz, who supports the incentive, said the school will come back to the legislature with more information in the coming weeks.
