GOSHEN – A Town of Newburgh man was arraigned on Monday on charges of murder, manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, concealment of a human corpse, tampering with physical evidence and making a punishable false written statement, in the fatal stabbing of a man who was staying with him.
The indictment alleges Christopher Smith, 43, killed his houseguest, William McMahon, 50, sometime between April 17 and April 21. The indictment also charges Smith with concealing the body by burying it in a planter at the Quaker Street residence and then making a false statement to police who were investigating the man’s disappearance.
Bail was set at $500,000 cash or $1.5 million bond. Smith remains in the Orange County Jail.
“Those who engage in violence must not be allowed to escape the consequences of their actions,” said DA David Hoovler.
