WEST HAVERSTRAW – The flood-prevention project along Minisceonga Creek in West Haverstraw has been completed with the work designed to prevent a repeat of catastrophic flooding that occurred six years ago during Hurricane Irene.
The project was a cooperative venture between Rockland County, the Rockland County Drainage Agency, West Haverstraw and GenOn, an energy company.
The project cost $963,214, under the $1.12 million contracted amount. It is near another embankment stabilization project along the Minisceonga for which the county received $1.02 million from FEMA last summer.
During Hurricane Irene, raging flood waters eroded the bank of the creek caused an apartment complex located nearby to evacuate its residents.
