GOSHEN – A Newburgh man, who shot and killed a 17-year-old in the
city, was sentenced in Orange County Court on Friday to 15 years in state
prison.
Tyler Castro, 23, was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision
by Judge Nicholas De Rosa in the death of Keyshan Gayle.
On August 2, Tyler Castro pled guilty to manslaughter in the shooting
of Gayle, 17, who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Castro admitted that he shot at a man intended to cause him serious injury,
but instead of hitting his intended target, he shot and killed Gayle.
A video surveillance system inside the deli near Fullerton Avenue and
Third Street in Newburgh, where the shooting occurred, captured images
of the victim being shot, but not of Castro. No eyewitnesses initially
came forward to report what they had seen and city street cameras in the
area were not functioning at the time.
A police investigation led to the arrest of Castro on October 12, 2016.
After extensive consultation with Gayle’s family, the district attorney’s
office allowed Castro to plead guilty to manslaughter with the understanding
that he would be sentenced to 15 years in state prison.
“No state prison sentence can ever repair the damage that is done
to a family and a community in a case like this,” said DA David
Hoovler. “I hope this brings some measure of closure to the victim’s
family.”
This tragedy was the catalyst that resulted in city officials repairing
broken street cameras, adding additional ones and repairing broken street
lights.
