PORT JERVIS – A Port Jervis police officer is credited with preventing a woman from jumping off the Mid-Delaware NY-PA Bridge into the Delaware River.
At 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to a report of a distraught,
suicidal woman on a bridge. Police were dispatched to all bridges in the
city limits in effort to locate the woman and check on her well-being.
Patrol Officer Richard Santini responded to the Mid-Delaware Bridge connecting Port Jervis to Matamors, PA, where a civilian pointed to a woman standing on the sidewalk on the upstream side of the bridge.
As Officer Santini approached to offer assistance, he saw her drop personal items including a family photograph and a cell phone onto the sidewalk and quickly begin to mount the railing and swing both legs over in an apparent attempt to jump off the bridge into the Delaware River.
Officer Santini quickly grabbed the woman and pull her off of the railing and onto the sidewalk where he was able to calm her down and render assistance.
Officers subsequently transported the woman safely to Bon Secours Community Hospital for mental health evaluation and treatment.
