NEWBURGH – City Manager Michael Ciaravino has called an emergency meeting of the city council for Monday evening to address “an additional certification required for the city’s COPS FY2017 grant application relating to a resolution declaring the City of Newburgh a Fair and Welcoming City.”
The resolution states the city, its police department and administration would “not enforce federal civil immigration law nor help facilitate ICE deportations, except where legally required to do so.” (See the resolution)
The Trump Administration has threatened to withhold federal funding to local municipalities should they adopt Safe City resolutions.
On Friday, U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber ruled following a lawsuit Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel that the Justice Department could not impose the requirements.
If Newburgh formally adopts a safe city resolution, it could stand to lose continued federal funding to pay for additional police officers. With the federal ruling in the Chicago case, what the Newburgh City Council does on Monday evening remains to be seen.
