NEWBURGH – Statistics released by the Orange County District Attorney’s office today show an overall better situation in the City of Newburgh, despite an increase in homicides.
Four people have died from gun violence so far, this year, compared with one by this time last year. The five-year ‘year-to-date’ average is two deaths.
The brighter picture, according to a stat sheet released by District Attorney David Hoovler, shows 60 percent year-to-date drop in shooting-related injuries with just 11 this year, compared to 28 year-to-date in 2016.
“I believe the reduction has occurred because of the significant collaboration between the City Police Department the District Attorney’s Office in our community based service providers involved in the give program,” said Hoovler. “The district attorney’s office has taken the extraordinary step of embedding investigators in the city of Newburgh on a daily basis to help coordinate with the investigations involving gun violence from the time they occur to the time they’re brought to court.”
Hoovler said they have put greater emphasis on the individuals who drive crime, and to give them an ultimatum: “Either they stop the criminal activity or they and everyone around them will become the focus of highly sophisticated and sustained investigations.”
