Unemployment up in Mid-Hudson cities

ALBANY – July unemployment in the cities of Poughkeepsie, Newburgh,
Middletown, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle and White Plains drove up the jobless
rates in their respective counties.
The highest city rate was in Mount Vernon at 6.2 percent; Westchester
County’s rate was 4.6 percent. The City of Newburgh followed with
6.1 percent; Orange County’s rate was 4.6 percent; followed by the
City of Poughkeepsie at 5.8 percent; Dutchess County’s was 4.3 percent,
the City of Yonkers (Westchester County) at 5.6 percent, the City of New
Rochelle (Westchester County) at 4.8 percent, and the City of White Plains
(Westchester County) at 3.8 percent.

Columbia County had the lowest unemployment rate in July at 3.6 percent, the same as one year earlier. Columbia had the lowest rate of joblessness in the state in July.
Dutchess County had a 4.3 percent rate, the same as last year.
Greene County rose from 4.7 percent in July 2016 to 4.9 percent.
Orange County rose from 4.5 percent last July to 4.6 percent this year.
Putnam County came in at 4.3 percent joblessness in July as compared to 4.2 percent one year earlier.
Rockland County rose to 4.5 percent from 4.4 percent last year.
Sullivan County’s July rate was 4.3 percent, up from 4.2 percent in July 2016.
Ulster County had 4.6 unemployment for both this and last July.
Westchester County rose from 4.5 percent to 4.6 percent.

Region-wide in the Hudson Valley, unemployment in July was 4.5 percent, up from 4.4 percent one year earlier. In this past July, there were 52,900 unemployed in the region, up from 50,900 in July 2016.
