POUGHKEEPSIE – Remediation is about to begin soon to address contamination at the Love Road Development site at 2 Love Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie.
The work, under the state’s Brownfield Cleanup Program, will be performed by applicant Herbert Redl with oversight from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
The 4.6-acre site contains remnants of former on-site structures, including building foundations and a driveway. The remainder of the site is vacant and overgrown.  The property is zoned commercial and is surrounded primarily by commercial uses with some residential areas.  The site was previously used as a petroleum bulk storage facility, a lumber supply yard, and a gas station.
The remediation work will include excavation and off-site disposal of “grossly contaminated soil” consisting of some 650 cubic yards of contaminated soil from the vicinity of a former underground petroleum storage tank.
A cover system will be installed including paved parking areas and/or a minimum of two feet of clean soil to prevent exposure to remaining contaminated soil and environmental easement will be in place to restrict land use and prevent future exposure to any contamination remaining at the site.
