GOSHEN – A Newburgh man, who pled guilty to felony assault in a knifepoint carjacking in which a woman was stabbed, was sentenced on Thursday to 18 years in state prison.
Alan Alberto, 26, severely injured the victim in the late-night attack
on December 13, 2016 that occurred in the City of Newburgh.
Alberto admitted stabbing the victim in an attempt to get her out of the car and drove it through the city streets as she clung to the car. Alberto narrowly missed hitting a police officer, who was on foot patrol as he careened the car through the streets.
Alberto lost control of the car, which crashed into a building and flipped over, trapping Alberto in the driver’s seat and pinning the woman under the car, causing her serious injuries including broke hips, legs, feet and knees, which required her to undergo at least five surgeries.
“The community will be safer during the almost two decades that this defendant will be in prison,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “This type of senseless violence deserves the severest of penalties.
The sentence is the maximum permitted under the terms of the plea agreement.
