NEW CITY – Longtime Rockland County Veterans Service Agency Director Jerry Donnellan has announced his retirement at the end of the year. He is taking a medical leave immediately until he retires, said County Executive Edwin Day.
Donnellan has served the county and veterans as head of the agency for 30 years.
The Nyack native is a three-time Purple Heart recipient and Vietnam War veteran.
Donnellan served in the Army in Vietnam and was honorably discharged after losing a limb in combat in 1969. He spent more than a year recovering and undergoing rehabilitation.  When he completed his rehabilitation, he worked as a stage manager with Frank Sinatra and travelled all over the world.
During his tenure with the county, Donnellan initiated the annual watch fires every Memorial Day and oversaw the creation of the county’s first satellite veteran’s administration health clinic in New City.
No successor has been named.
