NEWBURGH – It took only a matter of hours for Newburgh City Police
to arrest a man in connection with the murder of Robert Munson, 61, the
overnight advocate at the Youth Advocate Programs, Inc. Shelter at 44
Grand Street.

Tuesday’s murder was the second in as many weeks in Newburgh.

Late in the afternoon, police issued a wanted bulletin for the suspect,
Wilfredo Mercado, saying he was considered extremely dangerous, and within
a half hour, Det. Lt. Joseph Cortez, the acting officer in charge of the
department, told Mid-Hudson News he was in custody being charged with
murder.

The scene of the crime was a halfway house for sex offenders and parolees
at the former Pineapple Larry’s bar building.

Munson worked for the agency since 2014.

Last week, a 19-year-old man was shot to death on Bush Avenue and police
continue to investigate that crime as well.
