Cats of all ages roamed through the filthy house
TOWN OF KENT – A total of 57 adult and young cats, four kittens
and nine dead cats were found inside a residence at 14 Kent Acres Court
in the Town of Kent on Tuesday and the Putnam county SPCA said Friday
the conditions inside were so bad that the home was unfit for human or
animal existence.
Police were called to the home by the resident, who was removed by ambulance
due to a medical emergency.
The Putnam County SPCA was alerted and a search and seizure warrant was
executed resulting in the discovery of the filthy conditions with urine
soaked floors, feces throughout the house, no available food or clean
water and thick acrid ammonia in the air. Partially cannibalized bodies
of dead cats were observed.
The animals were taken to the Westchester Animal Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Due to the extreme severity of their conditions, five cats died overnight
while being treated and three were humanely euthanized because of the
severity of their conditions.
The majority of the cats are being cared for by Rescue Right Inc., which
is an animal rescue group based at the Northwind Kennels in Bedford.
The resident’s name was not released, but authorities said animal
cruelty charges are pending.
