DEERPARK – Police said Tuesday that the dangerous item brought to the Hamilton Bicentennial Elementary School on Route 209 in Deerpark on Monday was an air soft gun.
A student brought it to school and police were alerted at around 9 a.m.
Air soft guns are replica toy guns that shoot plastic pellets and are generally used recreationally, said Police Chief Richard Sztyndor.   He said there was no threat to the school, students or faculty and the gun was recovered.
The investigation is ongoing and no charges were filed against the student at this time.
The chief said his department is working with the Orange County Law Department, which handles matters in family court as part of the investigation.
