SAUGERTIES – A Saugerties man was arrested on April 17 by Saugerties Police after he allegedly broke into the Saugerties Reformed Church on John Street in the Village of Saugerties during the early morning hours. Nathaniel Schultz, 25, was charged with going into the daycare center where he caused damage.
He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance and issued an order of protection through April 17, 2018.
At 3 in the morning on May 3, Schultz was captured on video entering the Chapel and then Sacristy at the rectory of Saint Mary’s of the Snow Catholic Church in the Village of Saugerties.
While inside the Sacristy, Schultz was observed removing his clothes and then prostrating himself in front of vestments used during church services. He then opened a bottle of religious wine drinking from it several times.  At one point in the video, he urinated into a trash can inside the sacristy.
He remained there for four hours before being discovered by a congregant who arrived at the chapel to prepare for morning mass.
Schultz fled, but was arrested a short time later. He was charged with felony burglary and petit larceny and released on his own recognizance with an order of protection filed on behalf of Saint Mary’s Church.
