NEWBURGH – Weeks after
Acting Newburgh Police Chief Daniel Cameron retired from the department,
his replacement, Richard Carrion, announced he is going to retire at the
end of the month.

Carrion, a lieutenant in the department for 22 years, had been named officer
in charge since he did not have enough time in that capacity to be acting
chief.

City Manager Michael Ciaravino announced on Tuesday that he has named
Lieutenant Joe Cortez as lieutenant-in-charge of the department. He has
been with the department since 2001.

“Throughout L. Cortez’s career, he has experiences many aspects
of the police department including assignment with the Marshals Task Force
in 2008, Safe Streets Task Force in 2009 and the Youth Police Initiative
in 2012,” said Ciaravino in a memo to the city council. “Lt.
Cortez has also built a bridge between the community and the police by
being instrumental in starting a city-wide pop up cook out.”
