More passengers, with even more to come when Norwegian Air begins flights this summer

STEWART AIRPORT – The first two months of 2017 showed passenger
growth over the same period last year at Stewart Airport and with the
advent of Norwegian Air’s daily flights to Europe beginning this
summer, officials are predicting significantly higher numbers.
A total of 42,070 people used Stewart in January and February of this
year. That is a 3.8 percent increase over the same two months last year
when 40,531 traveled at the Newburgh area airport.
Stewart Business Development Director Michael Torelli told the Stewart Airport Commission on Tuesday that they anticipate an additional 100,000 passengers this year as a result of the new service and double that amount in 2018.
Airport officials anticipate other airline service will develop to connect
Stewart to other cities and Stewart Manager Ed Harrison said other carriers
are already exploring their options.
“There is other interest from other airlines and we haven’t firmed up any deals, but there is a high level of interest” Harrison said.
Cargo tonnage flowing through Stewart spiked in the first two months of the year, increasing by more than 12 percent – from 2,571 tons in 2016 to 2,884 tons this year.
