Depew, podium, announced the new program on Friday
TOWN OF WALLKILL – If someone is suffering from drug or alcohol addiction and does not know where to go, a new Town of Wallkill Cares drugs program could be their first step toward recovery.
The program, which is just being launched, is the brainchild of Councilman Neil Meyer. It is a police driven policy where someone suffering from addiction can go to the police department and a team of police officer volunteers will work with them to connect with recovery agencies.
“What we are doing is providing an open door for people to come through and that we are working with all these providers and we can hopefully find them the appropriate and correct resource for them to get treatment,” Meyer said.
Town Supervisor Daniel Depew said this new program completes the circle fighting the drug epidemic. He noted the town police have been using Narcan for those suffering from opioid overdoses, there has been an increased effort to clamp down on crimes related to drugs and drug violence, and the town has committed a full-time officer to the district attorney’s drug task force.
