WEST NYACK – The J.C. Penney
department store at the Palisades Center mall in West Nyack is one of
138 stores the company is closing later this year.
The company said it was shuttering the stores “as part of a continuing effort to advance sustainable growth and long-term profitability.”
According to a state notice, the company will lay off all 89 employees
who work at the Rockland County location on June 18. Some 5,000 employees
nationwide will lose their jobs, according to a statement from Penney’s.
Most affected stores will begin the liquidation process on April 17.
The Penney’s announcement follows word from Sears that it would
close stores including its Galleria at Crystal Run location in the Town
of Wallkill.
Both the Sears and J.C. Penney’s store are anchor retailers at
their respective locations. Both shopping centers are owned by Syracuse-base
Pyramid Companies.
