PEARL RIVER – Following Thursday’s snow storm, Orange and Rockland Utilities is asking its customers to clear snow and ice away from the equipment that delivers natural gas to their homes and businesses.
They are asked to carefully clear snow and ice away from the natural gas regulator and meter as well as any outdoor vents associated with gas equipment. If possible, the company said people should use a broom instead of a shovel to mi9nimize the change of damaging the piping.
Keeping the equipment and vents clear of ice allows for safe delivery of natural gas, officials said.
The utility also reminds residents that fuel-burning appliances should be vented to the outdoors where the products of combustion can be safely expelled after the gas has been burned.
If you smell natural gas, call O&R’s gas emergency hotline at 800-533-5325.
