NEW WINDSOR – Allegiant
Airlines at Stewart Airport will start its seasonal flights earlier and
end them later this year than previous years, assuredly making golfers
happy.
Previously the airline operated two roundtrips per week from June through August. Stewart Business Development Director Michael Torelli told the Stewart Airport Commission on Tuesday that service will double this year.
“They have already started booking their flights for this upcoming season. It is going to start earlier and end later, so we are going to have Allegiant to Myrtle Beach starting in May going through September and we will see double the amount of flights compared to last year, so instead of two a week, we will see four a week,” Torelli said.
Allegiant also flies year-round to Tampa-St. Pete.
The additional Myrtle Beach flights, coupled with European service on Norwegian Airlines, expected to start this summer, will drive Stewart passenger levels higher.
The number of passengers to use Stewart in 2016 totaled 275,313, a slight drop from 2015, when 281,501 people used Stewart.
The amount of cargo shipped through Stewart in 2016 flew by previous year levels. In 2016, 22,837 tons of freight were carried, compared with 17,018 tons in 2015 and 15,460 tons in 2015.  Of total tonnage, 772 international tons came through including cattle and horses to military parts and other heavy items.
Torelli expects last year’s numbers to increase even further in the future.
