MID-HUDSON – The annual count of homeless individuals across the country was held this week and it included going out in the community to meet with the less fortunate.
In Dutchess County, the county Housing Consortium conducted “Project Connect” with outreach in Beacon and Poughkeepsie, said Susan Tallardy of the Mid-Hudson Addiction Recovery Center.
“It is the last 10 days in January and everyone across the nation does it,” Tallardy said. “We typically do it in different places. Facilities are contacted and fill out a questionnaire regarding their homeless individuals to get their count, but we also go out on the streets and do surveys.”
A similar census was conducted late this week in Orange County.
The compiled information each year is forwarded to the federal government to assess what can be done to assist that population.
Homeless persons who were contacted were given information about services provided by non-profit agencies.
