Benjamin Gilman: 1922-2016

MIDDLETOWN – The funeral service for former Congressman Benjamin Gilman, who died on Saturday at age 94, will be held on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at Temple Sinai in Middletown. He will be laid to rest at West Point cemetery following the service.
Gilman, who was born in Poughkeepsie, moved to Middletown where he spent
the majority of his life.
The former House member was a decorated World War II veteran, having served in the Army Air Corps. As a member of the 20th Air Force, 19th Bomb Group, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal for 35 missions over Japan.
While serving in Congress, he was chairman of the Committee on International Relations for six years and served on the Select Committee on Missing-in-Action.
Shiva will be held at the Town of Wallkill home of Gilman’s widow, Georgia Gilman, on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a service held at 7 p.m.
